The term astakam  derived from the Sanskrit word a meaning “eight”.   Astakams were a very popular and generally accepted genre of devotional poetry

One of the best known astakam writers was Adi Sankaracharya, who created an astakam cycle with a group of astakams, arranged to address a particular deity, and designed to be read both as a collection of fully realized individual poems and as a single poetic work comprising all the individual astakams. He wrote more than thirty astakams in stuti [dedication] to various deities.  We have a few of  his compositions on this site.

We also have a few Sri Vallabhacharya’s compositions, along with his most popular “Madhurastakam” & “Yamunastakam”.  We will keep adding to the collection, so please check back.
